From 1837 Ankenes constituted [[Ofoten]] [[formannskapsdistrikt]] together with the district of [[Evenes]] (''Evindnæs''). On January 1, 1884 Ofoten was split, making Ankenes and Evenes separate municipalities. Ankenes had 1,734 inhabitants at this point. On January 1, 1902 the city of [[Narvik]] with 3,705 inhabitants was separated from Ankenes to form a separate municipality. The split left Ankenes with a population of 3,023.On January 1, 1974 Ankenes became a part of Narvik. At that point Ankenes had a population of 7,022 inhabitants, Narvik had 12,758.▼
