From 1837 Ankenes constituted [[Ofoten]] [[formannskapsdistrikt]] together with the district of [[Evenes]] (''Evindnæs''). On January 1, 1884 Ofoten was split, making Ankenes and Evenes separate municipalities. Ankenes had 1,734 inhabitants at this point. On January 1, 1902 the city of [[Narvik]] with 3,705 inhabitants was separated from Ankenes to form a separate municipality. The split left Ankenes with a population of 3,023.On January 1, 1974 Ankenes became a part of Narvik. At that point Ankenes had a population of 7,022 inhabitants, Narvik had 12,758.
 
Now Ankenes C hurch is aan partoctagonal church dating from 1842. It was built of timber and has 290 seats. Access to the municipalitysite ofis via the NarvikE6. Ankenes is also known for ''Millerjordbukta'', its shopping area calledand "Millerjordbukta" andthe theirlocal football team Hardhaus.
