(If you haven't seen Levi's OVA: A Choice of No Regrets, then go here to watch the two episodes:) Welp 🥱 Episode 1 Episode 2 I guess it's about time I made this (And for those who don't feel like reading all this, for real, it won't take as long as you think, just start reading and it'll just go by more than you think And if you feel like you don't have enough time currently, then just save this page and come back to it later, because I genuinely want you to read this. And all of this will only make sense if you read all of it) And even if you feel like this topic is something you personally don't care about or see as irrelevant, please try and read it. Because it may even help you view anime in a different sense. Oh yeah and I'm interested to see what you're guys' opinions on Levi is after reading this. (also, reading on a computer is recommended) DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ATTACK ON TITAN AND LEVI'S OVA: A CHOICE OF NO REGRETS (no manga spoilers) Ight👏So ya'll know Levi, right? Midget who can do the spin spin thing Levi Ackerman is a fan favorite in the series of Attack on Titan, nearly doubling the second most favorite character in the series, Eren Yeager. But in my opinion and from what I've seen Levi's placement in the top ten most favourited is the most controversial, due to the amount of threads I've seen questioning his placement and why he is so high. So order to gain more quantitative data on how people perceive him, I have asked many people in the past what their thoughts on Levi as a written character asking, if he is simply just a cool character. Now most of the people I've asked in the past were avid fans of Attack on Titan so I was expecting them to be a bit more biased in and heavily one-sided in favor of Levi having more to his character. But I was wrong, only a small percentage of the people I asked agreed. This is just one of the many reasons why I wanted to make this essay thread, as these extreme perceptions of him are widespread through the community if you were actively part of it. Because there are so many polarised opinions towards Levi, more so than any other character in Attack on Titan, so I thought this was an interesting discussion to dive into. I want to clarify that I am not making this thread to condemn the community's opinions and attack the people who do believe he's "just" a cool character. Your opinion is your prerogative, but there's an obvious discussion to be had here. One the I don't think has been talked about nearly enough.
So grab yourself some popcorn and listen to this song while you read on why Levi isn't cool and why he is my favorite anime character of all time. Also, tell me what song you chose after This one is short, so put it on loop This one is short, so put it on loop Levi's Popularity, Love, and Hate
First I want to discuss and address the large subsection of fans that make up Levi's cultural personality that have affected many people into viewing him as just well "a cool, fanservice character" and badass being his only trait. And on the other hand you have people who dislike his character for those very exact reasons. They believe his role in the story is no more than "fan service". That he has little characterization or doesn't contribute to the themes in the narrative. That he ruins the tensions and fights because he's too unrealistic and strong. And that he's a character designed specifically to cater towards what's popular in the community and that there's no real depth to him. I've noticed a large chunk of people dislike his character over the years purely because of the vocal subsection in the community that loves him. Now noticed how I've said the word "fan service" multiple times already to describe Levi's character. So let me actually define what the word "fanservice" means.
From watching the show, we do know that Levi's beyblade skills are buffed to the point where he is the best fighter in the series at fighting titans. This kind of notably "overpowered character" is prevalant throughout an abundance of anime and they're almost always the most popular ones in their respective series. People like the cold, reserved, and typical badass character who never smiles. People like Kenshiro, Jotaro, and Todoroki. In addition, we have his entire design which Isayama himself stated would most likely be popular in the yaoi community when he created him. His lean, muscular build, mixed with his calm expressionless face, are all physical characteristics that are well liked throughout multiple communities (fujoshis for example) And finally there's the fact that he is easy to ship with others. I've never necessarily been an avid fan of shipping fictional characters that I like together, but it's definitely easy to understand and evident with Levi's case and why he is so popular in this department with the whole domanatrix thing people infer he has with Eren and stuff. This guy basically contains every characteristic that makes an anime character well… popular And it's for this exact reason that he has gotten alot of criticism, as people believe the sole purpose of his character was to simply pander to what's popular in the community. Rather than being well-written, developed, and integral character in the story to serve the plot, instead there's a criticism that he was written in the story to serve the fans. Hence why there's this notorious perception mainly brought about by his massive cultural personality that people think he's "shallow, overrated, and no more than fan service and just cool." This is something I fundamentally FREAKIN disagree with. I find it very interesting how these perceptions of his character are brought about entirely by the community. It's not Levi himself that most of these people have an issue with, it's his massive fanbase and cultural personality.
Whether it's the extreme toxicity, aggressiveness, obnoxiousness, or depravity that surrounds it, a fanbase can always alter your opinion on a piece of media. Not that many people judge him without these inherent biases. Not that many people actually look at Levi… well… as Levi. Many people easily ignore his development, his motivations, his hardships, his sacrifices and his extremely important value and impact on the series as a whole. Many people dislike him because he's "too perfect". When in reality, the entire point of his character is to challenge the notion of perfection. The Title of "Humanity's Strongest Soldier" So the major criticisms of Levi that I've been told and have noticed are that he lacks depth, he ruins the tension because he's unrealistically perfect and strong and that he doesn't contribute to the development of the themes in the narrative. Once again, this is something I fundamentally disagree with. The Titans were seen as an inescapable and unbeatable form of carnage. At the beginning of the series, the average death rate of a Survey Corp expedition was over 30%, with the breach of Shiganshina resulting in over 10,000 initial deaths and the mission to retake Wall Maria leading to over 250,000 deaths. Even so far in the story there's been over 170 named characters who have died and that's considerably higher than most pieces of fiction, being compared to that of Berserk and Game of Thrones. And what greater form of meaningless to one's life is there than throwing hundreds and thousands of people to man-eating monsters, where no progress was made for humanity at all? Those characters were merely a statistic for population control and an example of the inescapable grim reminder that the titans posed, and the cruel world they live in. This catastrophic mood continues throughout the series where one dark event follows the other. And with each loss, humanity slowly falls deeper in a sense of depravity. It's directly because of this widespread, pessimistic, and nihilistic mindset most of humanity has, that Levi is absolutely crucial to this story. People actually see someone is winning against this "unbeatable force of carnage" and they become hopeful. Levi was someone who was seen to never fear the titans, let alone get physically hurt by them because of his unparalleled power in combat. Which then makes the people of this cruel, nihilistic world, finally see hope in it; that there is a chance that humanity can fight back and obtain freedom, that there is a hope to cling onto, and survive. Levi is that "shining beacon of hope" that people need in order to hold onto the will to live and move forward, which led Levi to inadvertently obtaining the title of Humanity's Strongest Soldier. Levi isn't necessarily fond of the title, and never was his intention nor his desire to receive it, but it fits him perfectly, because he really is the best humanity has to offer, which is why his role in the story is crucial. People think Attack on Titan as: "In order to survive in this cruel world against the titans, one must be strong" And Levi has shown his strength time and time again to the people to the point where they see that "glimmer of hope" and placed the role and expectation on him to being Humanity's Strongest Soldier. But how did Levi become so strong? How was it that he was able to be perceived as this "perfect soldier? Well that's because of the amount of hardships, loss, mistakes, and pain he has gone through that shaped him into being Humanity's Strongest Soldier. Levi's Life I've said many times that Attack on Titan is a very cruel world filled with loss and despair and that every character in the series has experienced it, but Levi is definitely the one who had it the worst out of everyone in the world of Attack on Titan. His life was by far the hardest. Yes, each individual character had it hard, and by no means even close to being easy, but I know for a fact that Levi's was the worst. And I believe people don't understand just how much he has actually lost. He never got to know his biological father because of the fact his mother was a prostitute who was trying to survive. He was born and raised in the underground into a place where people had nowhere to go and a place essentially for people be left there to die with low resources, higher fees, and little to no medicine or treatments of any sort. He soon after had to witness the passing of his mother and after being taking in and being raised by Kenny, a person who actually seemed like a father figure, abandoned him and eventually died in front of him right after revealing he was Levi's uncle. But when they went on their very first expedition together, they were killed and eaten by an abnormal titan when Levi wasn't there to save them. Some time later on in the series after Levi went to the surface, Levi Squad is introduced. Petra, Oruo, Gunther, and Ed; Four members hand picked by Captain Levi himself, and they were known as some of the strongest titan slayers in the Corp and their teamwork they formed together was unparallel than any other squad. But when they were trying to get Eren back to Trost District, while Levi wasn't there, they faced the female titan and in the end were murdered by it due to the unknown abilities of a titan shifter. Then you have Commander Erwin, the first and only man Levi ever respected. At the end of Levi's OVA, Levi perceived Erwin as an unwavering ideal of a commander. Someone who's judgement he can always trust and someone who has always selflessly throwing away his humanity for his duty. But when as Erwin has the responsibility and duty to fill his roll as a commander to charge and face the beast titan, Erwin and the rest of the entire Scouts (except for the main cast) rode to their deaths until the last minute. ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ My top three favorite protagonists in fiction of all time are: Guts from Berserk, Shouya Ishida from A Silent Voice, and Saitama from One Punch Man. And one aspect that all these character share in common is that they are all growing their characters and improving themselves as people and getting through their hardships by opening themselves up and building relationships with other people. Guts had to overcome his trauma from the past, move forward to new goals and learn to accept others into his life again in order to reach those goals. Shouya Ishida dealt with mass self hatred and had to cure his depression by finding the right connection with others. Saitama was so alone and bored to the point where he found life to be useless and needed people in order to get him out of that dark hole. This is one very strong aspect that personally I love and strongly believe that all humans should apply to their lives by accepting other people. But unfortunately, this does not apply to Levi. Or more so, it can't apply to Levi. Levi has lived his entire life meeting many people just to have them killed and taken away from him. This has happened to him over, and over, and over. He never had the chance to build the same relationships that others had, they all died before he was able to. The world of Attack on Titan is simply that cruel ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ I'm not saying this because I think Levi experienced the most pain and that he is better because of it Each character has their own writing to them and the ones I just stated are extremely sparse Many can argue Guts and several others had it worse, but that's not the point I'm trying to make. Even seen in the fourth season, when he and his troops were in the forest monitoring Zeke while he was in custody. Zeke managed to escape by sneaking his spinal into the wine that the troops drank and were turned into titans because of that. This led to Levi being forced to fight against his own comrades and in the end being forced to kill them himself with his very own hands. The worst part about being the strongest solider is that he watches everyone around him die. And what's worse, he failed to save them every time. That couldn't be more true for Levi. Attack on Titan is filled with death and tragedy and Levi is the one who has been surrounded by it all his life. The only other person who is alive that he has some what familiarity with, is Hange. They are literally the only two people left alive from the original Scouts. But but the thing is, with all of this hopelessness and everyone giving up and falling into despair, why is it that Levi, the one who has had it the worst, has not fallen into depravity? Wouldn't that make sense for the person to have had the worst life in this cruel world just give up like the rest of the people around him? Why doesn't he complain? Why doesn't he give up? Why doesn't he just break? It's exactly because of the pain he has went through that shaped him into being the person he is today. Learning from Pain Now I would finally like to be able to talk about the writing of his character and what Isayama's intentions were when writing him and some of the things that I learned from Levi's character that helped me grow as a person. Attack on Titan is a heavily character driven show, meaning emphasis is put on people's choices, thoughts, words, actions, and consequences. And Levi is no exception, where it's evident that his choices and actions are paramount to the narrative. There've been numerous occasions where Levi had the choice of making the decision of believing in the decisions of his comrades and working with them or believing in his own strength and working independently to fullfill his goals. And throughout the series, he has constantly made… the wrong choice.
In the female titan arc, even though it seemed like the right decision to make, Levi made the choice not to engage in combat when he and his entire squad were there, ready to fight her. Which in the end led to the death of his entire squad and almost Eren. Like I said before, alot of people in Levi's life have died, but out of all of those deaths, the most agonising ones that Levi had to overcome were, without a doubt, the deaths and Farlan and Isabel. Growing up as an orphan, his comrades from the underground were pretty much like family to him, so in addition to suffering the loss of not one, but two family members at the same time, Levi had to bear the feeling of guilt and regret for possibly enabling their deaths as their leader. The excruciating feeling of regret became the turning point in Levi's life and is the reason behind the title of the OVA. The painful feeling of What If? Scenarios in which we would have acted differently, as if we had all the information we have now. We basically beat ourselves up for not knowing everything and not being omniscient. Hindsight is always 20/20, and that's why it is so important to remember what we can and cannot control after the fact. Those "what-if" scenarios ended with a positive outcome in mind. They were ideal scenarios with perfect solutions. But in reality those ideal things won't likely happen and sometimes even worse things could have happened. My point is that those same actions in our ideal scenarios can also be far worse as well, it is all a matter of perspective and this is what Levi was able to learn at the end of the OVA: A Choice of No Regrets. But why do we do that though? Why do we even bother feeling regret if we know we can't change the past? Regret, just like any other of our emotions has a function for survival. It is out brain's way of telling us to take another look at our choices so that we can learn to make better decisions in the future. And this is really all you need to remember. Levi taught me that the practical use of regret is simply to help you make better decisions in the future; that's the perspective you should have on regret. Regret can either cripple you or propel you based on your perspective. You can spend your days thinking about what your should've done differently, or you can see it as an opportunity to not make the same mistakes again. The ladder is clearly the more productive choice because you have control over your future, as opposed to your past. You can decide what you are going to eat for lunch tomorrow, but you cannot decide on what you eat yesterday. So one of the first things that Levi learned from his pain of regret and I learned from Levi is to manage your perspective of that feeling of regret. Levi taught me to pay attention to my feelings and my "what-if" scenarios, to see if I'm only imagining ideal scenarios when I feel regret. The more I imagine ideal scenarios, the more I feel regret so instead I should see room for improvement in the future. And I should also focus on the future because I have more control over that. I can't change the past but I can change my perspective on the past and that is all that truly matters. Another important lesson that Levi learned from his painful experiences was the lesson on vigilance. Even as the strongest solider of humanity, Levi is never arrogant to the point of carelessness; even though he seems invincible at time. Even as Hajime Isayama decided to have scene where Levi fought twenty titans at the same time and still ended up winning, no one would bat an eye. Levi is portrayed as that powerful in the series. But despite this depiction of invincibility, that power never goes to his head. It's pretty common to think that someone with that much power would behave more arrogantly and recklessly, but Levi never shows any hint of negligence, and that is because he learned from expirience that no human soldier is invulnerable. Instead, Levi always leans towards the safer route whenever possible. For example, like each time he told Mikasa to fall back and regroup instead of recklessly chasing after Eren. And that vigilance is also a result of losing Farlan and Isabel. They became a reminder that no matter how strong or skilled Levi is, there will always be circumstances that are unpredictable and out of his control. This realisation is a double-edged sword:
If you think that anything you do today will most likely impact your future negatively, then there's no reason to strive for improvement. “If you begin to regret, you’ll dull your future decisions and let others make your choices for you. All that’s left for you then is to die. Nobody can foretell the outcome. Each decision you make holds meaning only by affecting your next decision.” - Erwin Smith When you started thinking that any mistake no matter how small, will destroy you, it makes it increasingly difficult to settle on a choice because so much becomes at stake. You end up striving for an ideal scenario that may not even exist. However, thanks to Erwin's advice, Levi overcame that mental block and has built a powerful understanding that mistakes and regret can be leveraged in a productive way to increase vigilance. As I described previously, regret is the essence of any learning experience; you become aware of what works and what doesn't, and the more painful the experience, the more effort you're going to put in to not repeat the mistakes. And that builds vigilance. Levi learned that the best tool one can have when making any decision, is experience.
Not only that, but relying on experience also helps you to be more assertive, as you become more confident in your choices. If you linger in that dangerous frame of mind where any little mistake can destroy you, you will freeze and you won't be able to make a single decision, so the only way out of this that I learned is to rely on your own personal experience. Doing so will give you the confidence needed to focus on the problem at stake. Instead of panicking you will be able to tell yourself: "I only know what I know now, so this is the best I can do." As a result, it will remove the uncertainties that you have so you can further trust your current options. This will build assertiveness. And with the focus that it brings, you will be as vigilant as you can be to avoid repeating the same mistakes you did in the past. Now, that doesn't mean that you will always be right, nor does it mean that you should never listen to others, but that is how you learn and become better, by making alot of mistakes. And learning to rely on others is also something you learn from experience. That scene showed Levi's understanding on the value of making mistakes and losing. You can bet on it that if you mess up really bad, you will make sure to be more vigilant in the future so it doesn't happen again. Yes, Levi have made many mistakes in the past, which highlights his fundamental flaw of despite being the strongest solider in humanity, he is not invulnerable and omniscient and will never know the outcome which will lead to him making the wrong choices. But the difference in Levi's character and what gives his character actual depth is how he deals with the consequences of his actions.Throughout the series, he's never made any grand speeches, but rather he takes in the knowledge and adjusts them accordingly. One of Isayama's main messages when writing these scenes of his character is that: It's impossible to fully know or arrogantly believe you know what the outcome of a situation may be. Therefore the most heroic mindset you can adopt is the willingness to learn, the ability to adapt to a situation, the pragmatism to throw your pride away and work efficiently towards your goal, and most importantly to never look back to fall into the pain of regret. Levi was shown to be capable of learning and doing all these things, hence why he is one of the most important characters to reenforcing the shows themes of sacrifice, selflessness and heroism. Levi is in no way an unrealistically perfect character that his cynics suggest. He is deeply flawed as a person, who time and time again has been shown to make the wrong decision. He fails to saves his friends. He regrets his choices. He gets hurt. He gets sidelined. And is never there when people need him the most. Is bad because of his flaws? Well… no. Cause every single character of the show has their own individual weaknesses, just like humans do. This just puts realism into a story where humanity is at the brink of destruction and people are just trying to survive. Levi's Weight of Responsibility and Selfless Empathy One of the biggest question in Attack on Titan is whether death is meaningless or not? It's asked countless of times throughout the entirety of the story. And this is why I believe Levi is one of the biggest contributors to the shows themes of sacrifice, selflessness, and most importantly, heroism. In my opinion, he holds significant narrative weight as one of his main characteristics shown through the story is to take in the dreams of others and give meaning to their otherwise "meaningless deaths". When someone conquers one hardship after the other, they will inevitably become stronger. And as Uncle Ben once said, "With great power comes great responsibility." Through all those painful experiences and hardships, Levi has gained a unique perspective on life and death that gives him the power to bring reassurance to others that have also suffered deeply in the face of death. With that, grew a sense of responsibilty and empathy. Even though Levi knew it was too late to save the soldier's life he made sure to bring him a peace of mind. One of the main character traits that Levi has was shown in this scene. It shows his deep sense of empathy that we later learned was obtained from his painful expirience. Hajime Isayama also made sure to focus on Levi decisively grabbing the soldier's hand covered in blood as to show us that Levi cares deeply about his soldiers, to the point that he forgets about his obsession with cleanliness, or at least he was able to put it aside during that moment. A very intricate and subtle detail from the author to further display Levi's empathy and caring nature. His promise to the soldier that his death wasn't in vain and that he'll exterminate all the titans shows that he's one of the few characters that can truly be considered selfless in the face of a world where most follow their selfish desires. He attempts to give meaning to the deaths of Farlan of Isabel by getting revenge on the titan who killed them and joined the Survey Corp as atonement. He even tries to console Dieter in episode 22 by handing him his dead friends Scout Regiment badge. Too many times, Levi has said and done the right thing; not because he needed, to not for personal benefit, but because he knew it would help the person cope with their pain. My point is that pain, tragedy, and mistakes can obviously help us become stronger ourselves, but they can also help us take responsibility in elevating the people around us. Well whenever I rewatch that scene, while I see Erwin now standing on the mountain of corpses that he made, I can't help but see Levi at the bottom of that mountain of bodies, carrying the lives of his fallen comrades on his shoulders. It's a very peculiar thing to think about because as it is shown in the series, Erwin is shown to be the most selfish character, while Levi is the most selfless, which is why the correlation between these two characters work so well together. One quote a friend showed me that I'm very fond of is the quote from One Piece: “When do you think people die? When they are shot by the bullet of a pistol? No. When they are ravaged by an incurable disease? No. When they drink a soup made from a poison mushroom!? No! It’s when… they are forgotten.” ~ Dr. Hiriluk These are very strong words and shows that Levi also believes for them to be true. Levi refuses to let his comrades' deaths be in vain, he refuses to let their sacrifices mean nothing in the end, and he feels a weight of responsibility to carry on the lives of his fallen comrades because… in the end, he also feels responsible for their deaths. It's even shown in season four when he was fighting Zeke for the 2nd time in the forest. He blames himself for not saving them, for not being stronger, for not being there when they needed him, for being unable to prevent their deaths. So in the end he carries on the weight of being humanity's strongest and bears the weight of the lives of all the comrades and people he wasn't able to save. He doesn't want the lives of his comrades to be thrown away and easily forgotten, he wants to give meaning to them so they won't just be another casualty in this cruel and miserable world. By the time the main story starts, Levi had already achieved his maximum potential. He is unparalleled in his combat, love for humanity, pragmatism and decisiveness, that he is by far the very best humanity has to offer. It's showing that realistically that Levi is a slave to his title of Humanity's Strongest. He is an empathetic character who constantly attempts to mitigate the suffering of others by seeing the big picture. As Kenny said: "The couldn't keep going unless they were drunk on something. They were all slaves to something. What are you? A hero?" Despite Levi not being fond of the title given to him, it's in his nature to take on the impossible task of being humanity's hero. To look at the bigger picture and do what needs to be done to prevent the extinction of his race. To him, the ends justify the means. Therefore his role in the story is a vital one: He is a shining beacon of hope in a world filled his misery and cynicism and is one of the few people in the series who selflessly devotes himself for humanity's salvation. The reason why it's not in his nature to accept meaningless deaths is because his entire life has been filled with them for as long as he can remember. His mother died when he was a child, the close friends he grew up with, Farlen and Isabel, he believes were killed because of his choices, he's had to say goodbye to his entire squad and countless amounts of comrades during his time as a Scout. But by staying alive and fighting in their stead, he wants to make their deaths mean something, and if that isn't heroic, then I honestly don't know what is. The mindset that Levi is simply an overrated character made to be a crowd pleaser with little to no characterisation particularly irks me because there are genuine reasons for all his personality traits, characteristics, and actions that are contextualized and interwoven into the story. Levi's Character Traits One of his subtle characterizations is being obsessed with cleanliness because he lived a dirty life in the underground and as a child he was on the verge of death and covered in filth, so his dream was to just have a clean meal in a clean place. And another is his strange, yet awkward communication style is a direct result of his underground upbringing. When I was talking to the same friend that showed me the quote, he also said that it shows clearly in the manga (Chapter 53, Page 15 and 16) that Levi finds it difficult to articulate and communicate to others how he sees the big picture, hence why he needs Hange there to explain what he means. (there's no spoiling in these pages btw) Unlike pretty much every character of the main cast, Levi never makes any large, grandiose speeches on his morality, dreams, or hardships. He is a character that has simply been built to speak through actions whether than words. When backed into a corner, rather than being a diplomat like Hange and Erwin, he always turns to violence or intimidation, as he sees it as the quickest and most effective way to gain a response. And my friend said that the meeting in Chapter 56 (Pages 14-26 and 33) is perfect in understanding character beyond the surface level and just how much he sucks at communication without Hange. Sinse he never told Historia before the meeting about how she needs to take on the role of becoming the queen and when unsurprisingly she declines, he immediately resorts to intimidation tactics by lifting her up. He did this in the courtroom with Eren, with Pastor Nick, Military Police soldiers, and many others because it's the best way he knows how to turn a situation in his favor. He never thought Historia would immediately accept her role, so he uses actions rather to words and explains the bigger picture to her. Historia accepting her role as queen is the only result that's acceptable. If Levi can selflessly put his personal feelings and reputation aside by playing the role of a lunatic to prevent humanity's extinction, then Historia can do the same by accepting her role as queen. This is what I meant when I said: To him, the ends justify the means. I'm not justifying his actions here, he was definitely being too rough with Historia, but it's understandable why he would act this way due to the context of the situation. He's rough around the edges in presenting himself, but he's doing this all in the interests of humanity and the well-being of everyone he cares about. He's truely doing everything he can to live up to his title of Humanity's Strongest, and to carry out his duties. Even though Levi is bad at diplomacy, resorts to intimidation to get his point across, and has an awkward exterior, his intentions are almost always noble and for everyone's well being in the long run. I'd unironically say he is one of the most compassionate, heroic, and selfless characters in the entire series. The only time I can think of Levi doing something selfishly that was not in the favor of humanity was… when he chose to save Armin instead of Erwin in Season 3 Episode 18. Levi's Choice One of the main themes throughout Attack on Titan is the idea of the dream. This idea is recurrent throughout the series and influences many characters. And one of the characters who addressed this topic was Kenny Ackerman. Kenny realised if he were to inject himself with the serum he stole from Rod Reiss, he might survive, but the dream he was drunk on would destroy him like the other people he had seen in the past. So Kenny let go of his dream, placing the serum it in the hands of Levi and he was free from the drunkenness of the dream he was a slave to, and this moment impacted Levi's character and would later determine his choice to let Erwin rest. Isayama has stated that he had planned Erwin to die sinse the very beginning and always wanted to write Levi and Erwin as a mutual relationship. For the most of the series their relationship definitely wasn't mutual. Levi perceived Erwin as almost a sort of ubermensch, "the unwavering ideal of a commander and someone whose judgement he can always trust and someone who would dedicate their heart for humanity." So faced with the choice of dying at the cost of never able to achieve his dream, Erwin finally dropped the facade he kept up for his 10 years of commander. For the time time, he was honest about his intentions to Levi and that everything he had done, all the sacrifices he had made, and all the speeches he had given had all been with his goal in mind. As Kenny has once been drunk on power, Erwin was drunk on the truth. And this single-minded goal had begun to rob Erwin of his humanity. Every moment, Erwin felt the eyes of his fallen comrades watching him and judging him. For the man who Levi believed this entire time to be a "selfless person" the realisation that Erwin was acting in self interest this entire time made him feel… well… betrayed. Isayama has made it apparent that people show their true colors when at death's door and Erwin is no exception. At that very moment, Erwin was presented with two possibilities: He could retreat from his failed mission to continue to live under control of his dream and hope that one day he would have another chance at learning the truth. And the other choice was to give the Scouts a chance at victory at the cost of he himself never learning the truth. What stood out the most in the moment was Levi's response. Despite feeling betrayed, he realised the commander's dream had begun to destroy him and was wavering between his dream and his responsibility. Levi wondered what retreating here would mean for Erwin. Would the best thing for Erwin be to throw the lives of the Scouts onto the pile of corpses, just to have another chance at achieving his nebulous dream? And what would happen if he achieved his goal? What would be left for him? Erwin, unable to make the choice himself placed his dream in Levi's hands. So Levi told Erwin, not what he thought of the situation but the words he wanted to hear most at the moment. This reinforces the fact that it's in Levi's nature to do and say the right thing. Not because he needed to or for personal benefits, but because he knew it would help the person cope with their pain. It also reinforces his heroic qualities of wanting to give meaning to their deaths by telling them their sacrifices will help him take down the Beast Titan. When Levi is given the choice of reviving Erwin or Armin as the Colossal Titan, it is a monumental moment for his character. From the beginning, it should have been obvious to what the choice should have been. It should have been Erwin. Pretty much all the characters, even Armin himself said that saving Erwin made more sense. Erwin's the commander, his achievements in leading the Survey Corps are truly outstanding, and he was able to recruit more soldiers than ever. Even with Mikasa and Eren's credentials for Armin, Hange was able to instantly shoot them down for the obvious reasons: Even though Armin shows alot of promise, Erwin has expirience and leadership skills that humanity needs and Armin lacks. But why does Levi choose Armin? Literally every single character except for Eren and Mikasa thinks that Erwin is the better choice. It's important to understand the difference between the drunkenness between Erwin's dream and Armin's dream. The difference lies in the drunkenness that Kenny referred to. Those who were drunk desperately clung to their dream as a means of seeking purpose, just like Erwin did. Evidence by when he said: For the first time, he realised that Erwin wasn't a "devil" like Floch suggested or a selfless commander who had all the answers. He was human, like the rest of them. Erwin had his own ambitions and dreams but in the end accepted Levi's decision to make the ultimate sacrifice to throw them away for the fates of humanity. Armin's dreams was different, he was driven by curiosity. Unlike Erwin, Armin wasn't drunk on his dream and was completely willing to make the choice himself to die for the cause and entrusted everything to Eren (as said in the episode). After this, Levi finally understood everything. He understood what Kenny meant and he understood that Erwin could never be free from his dream for as long as he lived. After Levi told him that he will take down the Beast Titan, for the first time, Erwin had fully devoted himself to his responsibilities and casts away his dream in order to charge to the death for the fate of humanity. Which is why in the end, Levi let Erwin rest. Levi had released Erwin from his dream, but now that they wanted to force him back into that role. Erwin was forced onward by his dream, but those bonds had been finally severed. To bring him back into this hell just so he could realize the dream he finally decided to toss away would be an insult to his selfless act. The most cruel choice of all would be to force him back into his role and take away his sacrifice. Maybe Erwin could have saved humanity, but at what cost to himself? Levi knew it was time to let him go. Like Kenny before him, Erwin could only be truly free after the chains of his dream were released. Yes, it was selfish of Levi to do this, sinse it would have been a better chance for humanity's survival to have chosen Erwin, but it's in his heroic nature to not insult Erwin's last stand, which reinforces the overarching theme of Shingeki no Kyojin: To surpass strong oppressions and break free of shackles. My Favorite Character But is Levi just a cool character? Well if you think so after reading this then FUCK Y-fine that's your opinion…IN CONCLUSION, was doing an essay on Levi worth over 8,660 words? Probably not… But Levi is my favorite character for many reasons. The entire writing of his character has changed my perspective and thinking in life, which leads to the quote that I created from his character and that I live by: "No one knows the outcome of one's life, no one knows if his or her decision is correct. But regretting the past only dulls one's ability to see into the future. After all, in order to see what's ahead, you have to look forward, not backwards." ~ Erebus Akeldama Levi encapsulates this philosophy perfectly. He, as a human, recognises that he isn't invulnerable and omniscient, the deaths surrounding him prove that. But he doesn't complain, just like my favorite protagonist in fiction, Guts, they don't complain. They see complaining as useless and instead knows that no matter what happens to you, no matter what hardship you face in life, you simply have to just keep moving forward, learn from their mistakes and make sure to have them never happen again. This is such a strong mindset that these two character possess that I believe everyone should have. Unlike Eren or Mikasa or Armin, when Levi fights, he literally has nothing to lose. He can go all out. And that's why he's so dangerous...that's why he's so strong... the concept of fear doesn't apply to him because he simply has nothing to lose. But it's also because of the deaths of his close friends and comrades that he fights on and lives, to carry their lives and give meaning. In the last season, if Levi does make it out fine, I'm very interested to see if he and Hange can carry on and defeat the Beast Titan and avenge Erwin and the deaths of his comrades. The whole point of my points isn't to try and convince to you like Levi or think that he is now the best character of all time, if he doesn't appeal to you then that's fine, but I want to help you guys not dislike his characters for the wrong reasons and realize that Levi isn't just cool. I'm hoping for the very least that if you like or care for his character that my points have somewhat changed your perception of him. Whether it be his importance to the story's themes and narrative, the fact that he's flawed as an individual as every other character, or that his labelling of being fnaservice comes from a warped perception brought on by a large subsection of fans, I hope you can at least give a bit of respect to the very much misinterpreted character, that is Levi. This is why Levi Ackerman is my favorite anime character of all time _________________________________________________________________________ Thank You So Much For Reading Here's a little reward: I'm sorry if the last parts seem a bit off. with my Saitama thread, I had 2 weeks to make it while with this one I just had a couple of days and I have only slept 4 hours for these past two days (it's currently 7:38 am and I haven't slept in 21 hours), so I'll fix it up a bit when I've gotten some rest.352167 342606 293304 210268 244327 347643 355631 355630 264920 262861 271007 267980 337680 166808 326301 239990 Mod Edit: Removed Copyrighted Material. |

I ain't reading all of that, so I'm happy that it happened, or sorry that it didn't. I don't want to sound salty or something, but writing a long article about whether a fictional character is "cool" or not, has the same weight of an essay on why strawberry ice creams are superior to chocolate ice creams. I spent long time and read the whole thing (phew) and to start: THATS TOO LONG!!! and yes some people just like him because how badass and 'cool' he is. BUT I THINK THAT'S absolutely FINE. Some people just watch anime for enjoyment like how i watch these movies: but when it comes to anime i like to get into it and study it in a way (when its serious anime like monster, aot, bsd, death note or has something more than overused jokes ) I WISH I STUDIED WHAT I AM SUPPOSED TO instead of anime though but that's a topic for another day. when it comes to attack on titan i have rewatched it 6 times. And i love and admire how well every character is written (exception: GABI AND PIECK , both should get killed off soon) so obviously i also spent lot of time thinking about LEVi the first impression of him we get is that he is a very skilled soldier, who is arrogant and 'cool'. in episode 9 or something, we get to see he and erwin are the men needed to get things done. We gradually get to know that he has suffered a lot in his life and he isnt edgy and arrogant for the sake of being 'cool' but because he was living in the underground and had bad influence by the bad people around him. Just like eren levi also is willing to get his hands dirty to protect what is dear to him. He is fearless and quick because he has lost so much that he has to keep moving forward in this cruel world hence i think he is similar to s4 eren and agree with everything you said. now i have chem class going on bye bro |

I actually did read it. Well made. And I agree, fan base or community can ruin characters or shows. Somehow those thoughts and ideas can become "canon" in the public mind. What about Levi then? After reading your post it is hard to call him just cool and I agree with your points. But if I'm not that interested in the show or character, calling cool character cool might be the easy way out when summarizing them. If you had to use only one word for Levi what would you use? What would others use? |

I like how you managed to summarise why I like Levi. He's definitely one of the most well-written characters from the franchise and possibly one of my favourites, but I feel a little hesitant to say that because I dislike the proposition of being grouped with 'a certain crowd' (as you mentioned). Wow. Well done for writing, editing, and formatting all of that. It takes me 2 hours to write about a 2k word review so i can't imagine how long it took you to write all that. Levi is definitely a great character. Didn't like him much when he was introduced but he stayed as one of the most consistently good aspects of an otherwise pretty inconsistent series. Like most people who watched AoT after it aired I only got most of my knowledge of him and the story and characters based on memes and, while funny, do a bit of a disservice to his character. |
